Do your body good and don't drink milk...?

Cows Milk

Cutting to the chase, cows milk is not good for you and there are a number of reasons why.  I'll be focusing specifically on Casein for this post. Casein is a type of protein that is only found in dairy products such as milk. Casein is broken down by enzymes in your body into something called Casomorphins. Casomorphins are opioid peptides (protein fragments) derived from the digestion of milk protein casein.

Opioids are substances that act on opioid receptors to produce morphine-like effects.Medically they are primarily used for pain relief, including anesthesia.Other medical uses include suppression of diarrhea, treating opioid use disorder, reversing opioid overdose, suppressing cough, and suppressing opioid induced constipation.Extremely potent opioids such as carfentanil are only approved for veterinary use.Opioids are also frequently used non-medically for their euphoric effects or to prevent withdrawal.

Side effects of opioids may include itchiness, sedation, nausea, respiratory depression, constipation, and euphoria. Tolerance and dependence will develop with continuous use, requiring increasing doses and leading to a withdrawal syndrome upon abrupt discontinuation. The euphoria attracts recreational use, and frequent, escalating recreational use of opioids typically results in addiction. An overdose or concurrent use with other depressant drugs commonly results in death from respiratory depression.[6]

The casomorphins in bovine milk appear to have opposite effects than that from human breast milk on infant development, but what about A2 cow’s milk? Just as bad as regular A1 milk.

Milk Alternatives

In the 70s, more than 12,000 Adventist men were asked about their use of soy milk, and then, they were followed for up to 16 years to see who got cancer, and who did not. So: “Does high soy milk intake reduce prostate cancer incidence?” “Frequent consumption…of soy milk was associated with [a whopping] 70 per cent reduction of the risk of prostate cancer.” Similarly, in a “Multiethnic…Study” that involved a number of groups, soy intake appeared protective in Latinos, too.

Prostate cells carry beta type estrogen receptors, which appear to act as tumor suppressors, kind of a “‘gatekeeper’…inhibiting invasion [and] proliferation,” and preventing the prostate cells from turning cancerous in the first place.

How can soy foods have it both ways—pro-estrogenic effects in some organs (protecting bones and reducing hot flash symptoms), but anti-estrogenic effects in others (protecting against breast and endometrial cancer)?

The original theory for how soy phytoestrogens control breast cancer growth is that they compete with our own estrogens for binding to the estrogen receptor. As you drip more and more soy compounds on breast cancer cells in a petri dish, less and less actual estrogen is able to bind to them. So, the estrogen-blocking ability of phytoestrogens can help explain their anti-estrogenic effects. But, how do we then explain their pro-estrogenic effects on other tissues, like bone? How can soy have it both ways?

The mystery was solved when we discovered there are two types of estrogen receptors in the body. And, so, how a target cell responds depends on which type of estrogen receptors they have. This may be “the key to understanding the health-protective potential of soy phytoestrogens”—the existence of this newly discovered estrogen receptor, named estrogen receptor beta, to distinguish it from the classic estrogen receptor alpha. And, unlike our body’s own estrogen, soy phytoestrogens preferentially bind to the beta receptors.

Problems with Milk Alternatives

Red algae, which became known as Irish moss, to make a jellied dessert, now the source of carrageenan, a food additive used as a thickener in dairy and nondairy products, as well as a fat substitute causes a host of issue in peoples guts.

The latest suggests carrageenan consumption could possibly lead to a leaky gut, by disrupting the integrity of the tight junctions that form around the cells lining our intestine, which form the barrier between the outside world and our bloodstream. This was an in vitro study, though, in a petri dish. We still don’t know what effects, carrageenan has, if any, in whole human beings. Some researchers advise consumers to err on the side of caution, and select food products without carrageenan, accusing the FDA of ignoring its “harmful potential.”

Best Milk Alternative

The new USDA guidelines include soymilk, which may be good because drinking soymilk has been associated with weight loss, relieving constipation, reducing cancer risk (including breast cancer, see also here), and preventing COPD. Soymilk has 75% more antioxidants than cow’s milk (sample breakfast here), and contains phytoestrogens that have a number of health-promoting effects. Girls who drink soymilk as opposed to cow’s milk develop at a more normal age, beginning puberty 8 months later on average. Also, drinking soymilk with spices, such as curcumin, may especially beneficial. Check out chocolate pudding and milkshake recipes here. Soymilk is also a good source of calcium, but it may block the benefits of tea. Also, make sure to shake it well before pouring. Finally, soymilk made with kombu may contain too much iodine and should be reformulated. Sticking to 3-5 servings of soy a day is considered beneficial, while drinking a day may prevent the decline in IGF-1 levels one would ordinarily expect on a plant-based diet.

Intermittent fasting!

Intermittent fasting is effective because it allows the body to enter its highest fat-burning state, which occurs about 8-12 hours after eating a meal. This helps eliminate body fat without sacrificing muscle mass. A typical eating schedule does not normally allow the body to reach this point.

Intermittent fasting boosts the body’s stress resistance, which increases longevity in humans (R).
It helps protect and treat the body from disease, which can delay aging (R).
Intermittent fasting can prolong the health-span of the nervous system by impacting biological pathways that regulate the lifespan (R).
In a study done on mice that were infected with salmonella, intermittent fasting lowered intestinal and systemic bacteria by boosting their intestinal immune system (R).

Cardiovascular Health

Intermittent fasting:
  • Decreases cardiovascular disease risk (R).
  • Increases HDL cholesterol and lowers triglyceride levels and LDL cholesterol (R).
  • Decreases resting heart rate and blood pressure (R).
  • Improves circulation of triglycerides and cholesterol (R).
  • Increases resistance to ischemic injuries (R).
  • Reduces the risk of coronary heart disease (R).
10-14 hours of fasting when we get up in the morning means that we have given our gut rest." - Dr. Satchin Panda

In addition to these important and very practical how-to tidbits, we dive into lots of interesting new territory...

How human anecdote and animal evidence suggests time-restricted feeding may be especially useful for gut-related issues, including inflammatory bowel disease and acid reflux.

How labs doing caloric restriction research may have actually been reaping the benefits of time-restricted without realizing it as an incidental to their experimental design.

The revelation that 70% of FDA drugs are subject to circadian effects and are either less effective or more effective at certain times of the day.

The effect melatonin has on the pancreatic production of insulin and the insight this lends to why we should probably stop eating at least 2-3 hours before we go to bed.

The bizarre way circadian rhythms affects everything from susceptibility to UV damage to recovery from surgery to cancer risk (at least if you think the World Health Organization knows what they're talking about).

Amla and Aronia Berry Super Food Benefits

Amla or Indian gooseberry and Aronia berry smoothie.

Emblica officinalis (Amla) is an ayurvedic herb which has all parts, including the fruits, used for preventative and therapeutic purposes. It appears to be most used for regulating glucose metabolism and cardiac health, and may also be neuro - protective.
amla appears to be able to reduce triglycerides and better the cholesterol profile as well as benefit cardiovascular health (the heart and vessels themselves). Most of these actions are attributed to its antioxidant properties, which are partially derived from a high Vitamin C content but also from a large amount of tannin compounds that are also found in other potent antioxidants like camellia sinsensis (the plant that bears green tea catechins).
Preliminary evidence suggested that 3g of the fruits (a fairly reasonable dosage) was as effective as 5mg glibenclamide twice daily.
Higher doses of the fruits (3g) appear to be able to increase circulating HDL cholesterol in otherwise healthy persons and diabetics.A decrease in LDL-C has been noted with consumption of the fruits over 21 days, affecting both healthy controls and diabetics.

Aronia melanocarpa, commonly known as the black chokeberry, is a sour berry with a high anthocyanin and anti-oxidant content. It is being researched for its potential health benefits.
Black chokeberries have a high anthocyanin content. Anthocyanins are the molecules responsible for the blue and red pigments in the berry. Black chokeberries also have more anti-oxidant molecules than blueberries.
Preliminary evidence suggests black chokeberry supplementation can reduce total cholesterol and blood glucose when taken by people with elevated cholesterol and glucose, but further research is needed to confirm this effect.

Electric self-driving cars create new industries, but what could they be?

I've been asking myself for 5 years now, what new industries will pop up in light of electric self-driving cars taking over our transportation system.  I compiled some ideas and research below.  Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

1. Expect oil prices to plunge

As more and more electric cars come online, less oil consumption is needed.  Even if self driving cars are gas powered they'll be able to navigate and carpool more efficiently. As petroleum prices fall from loss of demand, expect other crude oil by products prices to rise. Crude oil refining production will fall due to gasoline being its main driver as seen in the graph below.

So where is the opportunity? Bet on Jet Fuel prices rising, airplane companies either going out of business or really focusing on buying planes with the best fuel economy. Look into companies with alternative methods to creating lubricants and plastics, as they will become more viable in the future.

2.  No more metered parking

Driverless cars will drop passengers off at their destination and go find parking elsewhere (or remain on the road if they are part of a ride-sharing program). The U.S. has about 144 billion square feet of total parking, which represents up to one-third of the total real estate in some large cities. Reports estimate self-driving vehicles have the potential to reduce parking space by about 61 billion square feet, which is about the size of Connecticut and Vermont combined. A reduction in the demand for parking can result in reclaiming this valuable real estate for more beneficial social and economic purposes. However, it also means significantly less money for cities through parking tickets. In 2012 alone, Washington, D.C. collected $92.6 million in parking ticket revenue.

So where is the opportunity? Get ready for cars to be taxed based on time on the road.  Expect a tech company to develop a national or state level collaboration project to meter the time cars spend on the road.  This will allow municipalities to recoup money lost from parking, speeding and gas tax revenue. Expect street front businesses to gain real estate value and heavy parking density areas to lose real estate value.

3.  Real Estate, urban to suburban or suburban to urban?

As said in the CNBC article below, many think that self driving cars will provide easy commuting for suburban dwellers, which will entice urban dwellers to switch to the suburban life.  I would like to propose the opposite point.  I think that without the need of car ownership and self driving car fleets being able to provide fluid (non-stationary) transportation out of the city, it will become more popular and less expensive to live in the city.

So where is the opportunity?
Expect parking minimums to decrease or go away altogether, providing opportunities to buy real estate in areas previously off limits to residential building project because of limited parking spaces.  Watch for growth in urban areas with viable non-limiting transportation system (self-driving fleets). Look for a new development in drop off zones and mechanics to effeicently and effectively transition passengers.  Look for service areas that take the place of gas station, that recharge or replace batteries of cars. Car interior designers should be focused on making cars more office or home like to provide additional sleep, play or work time while passengers are riding.

CNBC Article

Real Estate:While freeing up parking space may present an opportunity, real estate agents should be worried. Faster and easier commutes will shift residential value from properties in urban centers to those in suburban areas. In commercial real estate, spaces currently predicated on human drivers will be converted to other uses. For instance, PARTNER Engineering CEO, Joe Derhake, has suggested there will no longer be a need for gas stations on busy street corners to attract people's attention.

Why I created my own hair and skin care products

Link:  Natur Crème

Modern Apothecary Style Skin Care Made From Scratch

Natur Crème was born out of my own need for effective skin care for my sensitive skin. I suffered from acne, chronic migraines, dry and itchy scalp. None of the commercial products I tried helped, and I decided to start looking into natural options. An article about the Oil Cleansing Method began me on a path of research. I started reading about green beauty and the chemicals in commercial skincare. As I poured through the pages, I was disgusted with what I read. Virtually all commercial products are full of harmful ingredients.

After reviewing hundreds of natural ingredients for skin care and sourcing the best components I created Natur Crème. People around me noticed the change in my skin and my demeanor, and wanted to know what I was doing. It didn’t take long before I was making extra to share with friends and family. As I began to learn more about Skin Care and the Industry around it, I saw a place where I could really make a difference.

I personally suffer from Hypothyriodism, a hormonal disorder. Emerging research is showing a DIRECT link between things of this nature and petro chemicals + hormone-disruptors.. Hypothyriodism can cause infertility by the age of 12. If I can educate one person about what they are putting in their body, then I have done my job. Artificial Fragrances and Parabens are not good for you body.

I have a deep passion for nature and holistic medicine. I have dedicated my life to Natur Crème, and am constantly learning and incorporating all nature has to offer into my line. As my line expands, it is my goal to make you natural products that are exactly the texture and feel you expect, without any fake junk.

Natur Crème Scalp Spray is the first product I've created and will always be my pinnacle product that allowed me to live a better more healthy life.

I do not use anything synthetic, artificial, toxic, or as filler. My products are made with the best stuff on earth just for you. My goal is to provide you with simple, pure, natural, and safe alternatives to the chemical-filled products.
